The Perfect Outdoor Ceremony

An outdoor wedding can be a beautiful, meaningful event and the perfect location is often a place that is very special to you or provides the perfect backdrop for your vows. We have been lucky enough to assist a number of couples this summer with the set up (and pack down) of their wedding ceremony so thought we’d share some tips that will allow you to create the perfect outdoor ceremony.

Location, location, location

The first thing to consider is the location itself. The ceremony site should be easy to find and easily accessible with plenty of available parking. Make sure you are clear on your invitation of the exact location as beaches or gardens can be big places. Consider what signage will be needed to point guests in the right direction and make sure your guests will be able to comfortably walk to the ceremony.

Keep your guests comfy

Visit the ceremony location at the same time you plan to say ‘I do’ and check for shady areas. Create your seating plan based on this so that your guests are comfortable on a hot day and if there is no shade consider erecting a couple of market umbrellas

If it is going to be a hot day consider setting up a drinks station for guests to enjoy prior to your arrival. Having some old fashioned fans and sunscreen on hand is also advisable for those guests who didn’t realise they would be in the sun.

Plan to have enough seats for elderly guests, pregnant friends and other guests who may have found the walk to your ceremony location exhausting. We always suggest enough seats for 1/3 of your guests.

And finally check where the nearest toilet facilities are and make sure someone puts signs out directing guests to them.

Set up (and pack down) logistics

Setting up your ceremony can be quite time consuming and should not be a task you or your fiancé consider doing on the day. You will need to organise for someone to inspect the site on the day for hazards and have a plan in place to get your chairs, decorations and food to the location. You will also need to check if you have any time restrictions in regards to your set up and pack down as some locations may book multiple weddings each day.

Consider the sound.

Your vows, readings and love story are what guests have come to hear so remember to test the acoustics of the area. If you have chosen a windy location or a large open space then we recommend you hire a PA system for you, your celebrant and guests doing readings to use.

Finally the perfect outdoor ceremony has the perfect wet weather back up plan

Happy planning
